When it comes to scarification, it's a relatively new trend. Mind you, it's been around for centuries, but it's recently been catching on as the new fad in Body Modification. This is going by the fact the recently there's been a lot more people inquiring and getting scar work done and posting it on BodyMod.org (http://www.BodyMod.org).

For those of you that are looking to getting some scarification work done on your body, I can help you with a couple tips and bit of info to keep in mind. First, just like any other type of Body Modification, make sure that you're going to someone that's been doing it for years, and has an expansive portfolio to show you. Don't go to someone that's got a good price, or is just available. Make the trip and go to someone that knows what they're doing. It's going to be hard to find a reputable scarification artist because of a few reasons. The first is that it's not very common. Second, you won't find them in a strip mall, as they are a true Body Modification artist and are not cookie-cutter friendly. And lastly, it's borderline illegal in the US. I say borderline, because depending on the judge and the procedure, it can be considered practicing medicine without a license. I have mixed opinions about this, but lets save that for another article.

The best tip that I can give you about the scalpels that are used is that you should make sure that they are surgical grade, and they should be using the disposable ones (they're cheap, effective, and guaranteed clean). If you're going to someone that is an expert in the field, and they use a specific scalpel (or scalpels), then they should all be cleaned by an autoclave, and individually wrapped in sterilized bags. For the healing process, it's both the same and the opposite as any other type of Body Modification. It's the same in that you want to keep it as clean as possible as all times, and to clean it regularly. It's opposite in the fact that you need to aggravate the wound as much as possible. Scraping away all signs of scabbing and such. This aggravation is what really brings out the scarring process. If you let any part of it heal too well, you won't have a well formed scar, and you'll have to do it over again. And unless you're in it for the pain, you probably don't want that!

After your get your work done, you should then post it for the world to see and spread the word of where you got it done and who did it. This way, others that are researching where to get good scarification work, will have that much more helpful info to help them out! A great place to do this is BodyMod.org (http://www.BodyMod.org). It's a great Body Modification community where you can post pictures of and type of Body Modification for free and even post the studio you got it done at.
